Gente de Mezcal Online Cocktail Experiences — Online Mezcal Tasting Classes

Gente de Mezcal is an independent mezcal brand with its own agave plantation. They believe in producing mezcal in a traditional and sustainable way, to the extent that they ship their mezcal exports to the UK on sailing boats using New Dawn Traders, to avoid creating CO2 emissions.

Gente de Mezcal means ‘Mezcal People’ and the company was founded in 2015 by two friends, Hardey Martínez and Juan Carlos Muñoz Flores, who were both lovers of mezcal. One of the aims was to showcase the mezcals of Maestro Mezcaleros from all over Mexico, and to benefit the communities they come from. They were later joined by Erika Martinez, who looks after Gente de Mezcal in the UK market, which it entered in 2018. They became available in the USA the following year.

Gente de Mezcal Awards

In April 2019 at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition Gente de Mezcal proved they’re not just acting sustainably, they are also producing top mezcals. They won a Double Gold Medal for their Tobalá, a Gold Medal for their Espadín, and another for their Tepeztate mezcal. It was the first time Gente de Mezcal had entered any spirits competition.

Mezcal and Mysticism

The mysticism of mezcal is also part of the Gente de Mezcal ethos. In central Mexico, Mayahuel is the goddess of the agave plant, known in Mexican is the maguey. She is also associated with fertility and nourishment.

Tasting Mezcal Online from Mexico City

Gente de Mezcal now have three locations in Mexico City: El Salon, Salon Rosario, and Los Romanticos. At each of these they offer mezcal tastings, both in person and online. You can book an online mezcal tasting and other experiences on their website… and you don’t need to be in Mexico to do it!

You can also invite up to six guests to join you at El Salon, and up to ten guests at the other two venues. At El Salon, you can book a straightforward online mezcal tasting, which will last about two hours. Salon Rosario offers a Mexican Mixology Masterclass, and this lasts for two-and-a-half hours, while Los Romanticos provides a three-hour Karaoke and Cocktails experience. Prices at the time of writing are from £32-35 and you can book them through Airbnb.

There’s also a shorter 90-minute Mezcal and Tequila Masterclass for £22, which has had literally hundreds of 5-star reviews – so they’re clearly doing something right.
