A Complete Guide to One of Scotland’s Finest Speyside Whisky Distilleries
Few Scottish distilleries can match the combination of history, family ownership and traditional whisky-making found at Glenfarclas Distillery. Nestled beneath the imposing slopes of Ben Rinnes in the heart of Speyside, Glenfarclas has built an international reputation for producing rich, full-bodied single malt Scotch whisky matured almost exclusively in sherry casks.

Unlike many famous Scotch whisky distilleries that have become part of large multinational companies, Glenfarclas remains proudly independent. It has been owned by the Grant family since 1865, making it one of Scotland’s longest continuously family-run distilleries. That independence has allowed Glenfarclas to maintain its own style and traditions while earning the respect of whisky lovers around the world.
Whether you’re planning a whisky tour of Speyside or simply want to learn more about one of Scotland’s classic distilleries, Glenfarclas offers an authentic glimpse into centuries of whisky-making.
Where is Glenfarclas Distillery?

Glenfarclas Distillery sits in the heart of Scotland’s famous Speyside whisky region near the village of Ballindalloch. The distillery lies beside the A95 road between Aberlour and Grantown-on-Spey, making it easy to include as part of a Speyside whisky trail.
The surrounding countryside is classic Speyside scenery, with rolling farmland, woodland and the towering presence of Ben Rinnes providing a dramatic backdrop. Water used in production comes from springs high on Ben Rinnes, contributing to the distillery’s distinctive character.
Visitors travelling from Inverness can reach the distillery in around an hour by car, while it is approximately two and a half hours from Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The History of Glenfarclas Distillery

The name Glenfarclas translates from Gaelic as “Valley of the Green Grass,” an appropriate description for its peaceful rural setting.
Although illicit whisky-making had taken place in the area for generations, Glenfarclas officially received its licence in 1836. The founder, Robert Hay, established the legal distillery, taking advantage of the plentiful water supply flowing from Ben Rinnes.
The defining moment in Glenfarclas’ history came in 1865 when local cattle farmer John Grant purchased the distillery. Remarkably, ownership has remained within the Grant family ever since, with six generations overseeing its development.
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, much of Glenfarclas’ production was destined for blended Scotch whiskies. However, as interest in single malts grew after the 1960s, the distillery increasingly established its own identity.
One of Glenfarclas’ greatest strengths has been its commitment to traditional methods. While many distilleries modernised rapidly, Glenfarclas retained direct-fired stills until relatively recently and continues to use large copper pot stills among the biggest in Speyside. The distillery also became renowned for maturing its whisky in high-quality Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, producing the rich fruitcake, dried fruit and spice flavours that define its style.
Today Glenfarclas exports to more than 90 countries while remaining family owned—an increasingly rare achievement in the Scotch whisky industry.

How Glenfarclas Whisky is Made
Production begins with malted Scottish barley, which is milled before being mixed with warm spring water from Ben Rinnes in the mash tun. The resulting sugary liquid, known as wort, is transferred into large wooden washbacks where yeast is added.
Fermentation typically lasts several days, creating a beer-like liquid called wash.
Distillation then takes place in Glenfarclas’ impressive copper pot stills. The distillery operates some of the largest stills in Speyside, helping produce a spirit that is both rich and elegant.
The new-make spirit is filled almost exclusively into Spanish Oloroso sherry casks for maturation. These casks play a vital role in shaping Glenfarclas’ signature flavours of dried fruit, raisins, orange peel, Christmas cake, toffee and warming spice.
Scottish law requires whisky to mature for at least three years, but Glenfarclas is particularly well known for ageing many of its whiskies for much longer, allowing exceptional depth and complexity to develop.
