The Cocktail Deck

Travel Distilled reviews The Cocktail Deck, a neat pocket gift idea for home bartenders that provides 52 classic and modern cocktail recipes like playing cards.

Goodness knows there are enough cocktail books in the world, though I’m sure they’ll keep on coming. For one thing they make nice gifts for the home bartender, but how do you choose one from among the hundreds available?

So someone at Summersdale Publishers must have been pleased when they came up with this simple but really neat idea for presenting both classic and modern cocktail recipes – present 52 recipes a little like a deck of cards, in a box, with a wooden stand that will hold the recipe you’re working on.

The Cocktail Deck

It is very simple and I thought at first glance it was going to be a gimmick, aimed at catching the Christmas gift market as a stocking-filler, or a quick and easy birthday gift.

But as I looked through it, I realised this was going to work brilliantly, and would be something I’d keep and use myself.

As well as the recipes and the wooden base, there’s a booklet that’s only a few pages long but it tells you all about the very basics – which glasses you need (each recipe card tells you the kind of glass to serve it in), some terminology, essential equipment, and a mini-dictionary of cocktail types.

Underneath the booklet in the attractive and solidly-made box come the 52 recipe cards. These don’t quite range from A-Z but instead from an Aperol Spritz to a Tequila Sunrise. One side of the card has a bright and attractive graphic of what the cocktail looks like, and the other side has the recipe with a few notes and another graphic for the kind of glass you should use. Simple but effective.

I can’t list all 52 cocktail recipes here but they include all the ones you’d expect (Manhattan, Margarita, Gimlet, Daquiri, Negroni, Cosmopolitan, Bloody Mary – you get the picture) and some less sell-known ones but nothing too out-of-the-way: Apple Pie, Blue Lagoon, Diplomat, Fuzzy Navel. That kind of thing.

And there’s not much more to be said. It’s a simple idea but it works. You can buy it through the publishers, Summersdale Publishing, or direct from Amazon.
