Travel Distilled tells you all you need to know about visiting Laphroaig, Islay’s famous distillery, complete with a full history of Laphroaig.
The Laphroaig Distillery
Laphroaig Distillery, located on the Isle of Islay in Scotland, is one of the most renowned whisky distilleries in the world, celebrated for its distinctive peaty and smoky single malt Scotch whiskies.
The History of Laphroaig
Laphroaig Distillery, nestled on the southern coast of Islay near Port Ellen, is one of Scotland’s most iconic whisky producers. Founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston, its name derives from the Gaelic “Lag Bhròdhaig,” meaning “the hollow of Broad Bay,” reflecting its coastal setting.

The Johnstons harnessed Islay’s abundant peat and pure water to craft a whisky renowned for its bold, smoky, and medicinal character. Over time, Laphroaig’s distinctive style earned it a devoted following, especially among those who appreciate heavily peated single malts.
Bessie Williamson
A pivotal figure in its history was Bessie Williamson, who joined the distillery in 1934 as a secretary and rose to become its manager and eventual owner. Upon the death of Ian Hunter, the last Johnston family member to run Laphroaig, she inherited the distillery in 1954, becoming the first woman to own and manage a Scotch whisky distillery in the 20th century. Her leadership helped expand Laphroaig’s global reach, particularly in the U.S., where she became a spokesperson for Scotch whisky.
The Laphroaig Distillery
Ownership changed hands several times in the latter half of the 20th century—from Long John International to Whitbread, then Allied Domecq, and eventually to Beam Inc. In 2014, Beam was acquired by Suntory Holdings, placing Laphroaig under Japanese stewardship.
Laphroaig holds the unique distinction of being the only whisky to carry the Royal Warrant of the Prince of Wales, awarded in 1994 during a visit by then-Prince Charles, who favored the 15-year-old expression.
Today, Laphroaig continues to produce its signature peated whiskies using traditional methods, including on-site malting and aging in coastal warehouses, preserving its legacy as one of the most richly flavored Scotch whiskies in the world.

Flavour Profile
Laphroaig’s unique flavor profile is attributed to its traditional production methods, including the use of locally sourced peat, which imparts a characteristic smokiness, and its own maltings floor, one of the few remaining in Scotland. The distillery is also known for its use of ex-bourbon barrels for aging, which adds a layer of sweetness and complexity to the whisky.
Over the years, Laphroaig has garnered a loyal following and numerous accolades. The distillery’s whiskies are available in a range of expressions, from the flagship 10-year-old to limited editions and cask-strength releases.
