Visiting Craigellachie

Travel Distilled’s guide to visiting Craigellachie Distillery on Speyside in Scotland, including a history of the distillery and whether tours are available.

Craigellachie Distillery GlassNestled in the heart of Speyside, Scotland’s most prolific whisky-producing region, Craigellachie Distillery has been quietly crafting bold and characterful single malts since its founding in 1891.

 History of Craigellachie Distillery

The distillery was the brainchild of Alexander Edward, a prominent figure in the whisky world, and Sir Peter Mackie, famed for his involvement with Lagavulin and the creation of the White Horse blend.

The original distillery was designed by Charles Doig of Elgin, whose signature pagoda-style chimneys still crown the building today. These architectural features are not just aesthetic—they were designed to improve ventilation in the malt kilns, a crucial part of the whisky-making process.

Craigellachie was incorporated as a limited company just two years after its founding and rebranded in 1896 as Craigellachie-Glenlivet Distillery Ltd. Despite its early promise, some sources suggest that whisky production didn’t begin in earnest until 1898. However, Alfred Barnard, a renowned whisky chronicler of the time, visited in 1893 and noted the distillery’s distinctive pineapple aroma—a hallmark of Craigellachie’s spirit.

Ownership of the distillery changed hands several times over the decades. It was acquired by Peter Mackie in 1916, then passed to the Distillery Company Limited in 1927, and subsequently to Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD) in 1930. A major reconstruction in 1964–65 doubled the number of pot stills, enhancing production capacity. In 1998, Craigellachie was sold to John Dewar & Sons, which was later acquired by Bacardi.

Today, Craigellachie remains operational and continues to produce whisky with a distinctive heavy, sulphurous character—an intentional result of its use of worm tub condensers, a traditional and less efficient cooling method that imparts bold flavors.

Signature Releases

Craigellachie’s single malts are known for their muscular, meaty profile—unusual for Speyside whiskies, which are typically lighter and fruitier. For many years, the distillery’s output was primarily used in blends, especially Dewar’s, but in 2014, Craigellachie stepped into the spotlight with the launch of its own core range under the “Last Great Malts of Scotland” initiative.

Here are some standout expressions:

  • Craigellachie 13 Year Old
A robust and complex dram, this whisky showcases Craigellachie’s signature sulphurous notes, balanced with tropical fruit and spice. It’s matured in a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks.
  • Craigellachie 13 Year Old Bas-Armagnac Cask Finish
A newer addition to the lineup, this expression is finished in Bas-Armagnac casks, adding layers of dried fruit, oak, and subtle sweetness.
  • Craigellachie 17 Year Old
A more refined version of the 13-year-old, this whisky offers deeper notes of baked apples, leather, and spice, with a lingering finish.
  • Craigellachie 23 Year Old
The crown jewel of the range, this limited release is rich, oily, and full-bodied, with notes of tropical fruit, toasted oak, and a hint of smoke. It’s a favourite among collectors and connoisseurs.
  • Craigellachie 19 Year Old (Travel Retail Exclusive)
Available primarily through duty-free outlets, this expression is a rare treat for travelers seeking something special.
